Good to know

We love to design spaces that are not in a box. We want to give our guests an experience that is meaningful and memorable. We have one other space here if this one is booked: Our private roundhouse is slightly less expensive, but with a shared bath. Let's start with the turret. 14 feet tall in the center, the eight-sided cedar-lined space has windows all around and a large skylight in the center. This opens out to the upstairs deck to catch the summer breeze (or smell the flowers or help yourself to the fresh herbs). Beneath is a covered deck, where we have our "spare" kitchen and full-size fridge. From the turret, you pass through the triclinium, where the glass balusters give you unimpeded view of the trees and view to the south of the house. (We don't offer TV, but you won't miss it.) Then there's the kitchenette, which has a few surprises of its own. (Don't make us tell you in advance.) All the basics you need are here: oven, microwave, stovetop, sink. The kitchenette includes a dorm-sized refrigerator. We keep it outside on your deck, behind a sliding copper door. (We don't like listening to refrigerators cycle and hum, so that's why we keep them outside. Weird, right?) From there we move to the "bedroom" -- a full-size Murphy Bed that tucks into a windowed corner or folds up into a wall. That doubles as a partition from the rest of the space. Beside that is the bath, with a shower.

Other Details to Note

This is the second space we've built to share on airbnb. Our enchanting roundhouse has been a favorite for eight years. This second space is more self-sufficient. (It's also twice the size -- approximately 400 square feet.) It is upstairs, the full-size bed is tucked into a corner, and some passages are rather narrow. That's intentional, to add to the charm. But you should know it before you book. There's also a glass oculus in the center of the turret floor. The glass is over an inch thick. It's completely safe to walk on it. Many are intrigued how the light from beneath "breaks up" the space. Others prefer to cover it with the carpet circle provided for this purpose. Directly beneath the turret, we have a small dining area that we make available to guests for an extra $10 per night. It's perfect for those who would like a bit more room. (It's otherwise left vacant.) If you can't find that "deluxe" option (We call the "loftier apartment"), we can point you there. Just message us. This space is completely self-contained (separate entrance, heat & cooling controls, full kitchen and bath), but it is connected to our main house so there is a little bit of "auditory overlap." In other words, you may hear a coffee pot in the morning. The upstairs space has everything that most guests need. The spiral staircase opens to a dining area below that is unoccupied when guests are upstairs. That downstairs space is separated from the main house by glass walls and plush theatre curtains. Another glass wall and more theatre curtains separate the spiral stair and dining area from the laundry room at the back of the house, which is available to all guests. As another Superhost put it so elegantly, the space is private, but not "honeymoon private." If absolute privacy is your thing, great! We recommend you try booking our Oregon Roundhouse instead. Our listings include a 9.5% room tax assessed by the city of Eugene. Those added funds are used to promote tourism and other good things around Lane County. MISCELLANEOUS NOTES: #1. We have a neighborhood lending library at the curb, where the walkway begins for your entry. If you brought a book on your trip that you've just finished, feel free to leave it there for a neighbor to enjoy. Or help yourself to one, if something catches your eye. #2. Before you confirm your reservation, please double-check certain details. Have you inputted the correct dates and are you reserving for the correct number of guests? This is important because those details may alter the price you're being quoted. (We give solo travelers the lowest possible rate. All others pay a bit more.) #3. Our check-in time is usually (anytime after) 3 pm. Occasionally, we can accommodate early arrivals, or luggage drop-off before the space is cleaned. We always appreciate knowing roughly when you expect to arrive. That helps us prepare. #4. We send all our guests an email with detailed instructions and up-to-the-minute details for their visit. Please send us your best email address after you've made your reservation. #5. We have a (slight) presence on social media, so if you feel the urge to take pictures and share them with your friends, we'd love it if you'd tag us at "aloftapt"and "dksez"....

House Rules

We enjoy hearing the mix of wildlife sounds after dusk, so we ask guests to be especially quiet once it begins to get dark. We don't want to spook the deer, the ducks, the birds, the frogs, etc. (Everybody sleeps better too!) Common sense and general decency should suffice. The space is not designed for pets or small children. (Our roundhouse is much better for those situations.) Sorry, no smoking.... Please doublecheck that the number of guests is correct on your reservation. (The site defaults to one guest, but most people travel in pairs. We charge a bit more for a second guest. This keeps our rates as low as possible for solo travelers.) Thanks!

Accessibility

Neighborhood

Friends refer to our house as "the center of the universe" for good reason. Everything is nearby, yet it's quiet and secluded. The best of everything.

Guest Access

We send our guests detailed directions via email. Please arrive (after 3 pm) at your own convenience. The external stairs are private, but the steps are fashioned from all-weather tread steel. (Not comfortable for high heels or bare feet.) If you find yourself in a hurry when you're leaving, feel free to use the vintage 1950s playground slide. It's attached to the back deck, just for fun. (No, we don't have a fireman's pole, but that's a good idea.)

What a unique find! We loved every detail of this cozy spot. The energy and unique design made it such a fun escape. The attention to detail, history of the house, board games galore and great music on Alexa made it the perfect place to rest, laugh and reconnect. Thanks for a great stay!

This was one of the more unique Airbnb’s I’ve stayed in so far! I was visiting Eugene solo over the thanksgiving holiday week. Don had let me know he was going to be out of town and left instructions for me to reach out to a neighbor if needed. Everything was in order upon my arrival and the home was just as he described and so much more! There was no need to bother the neighbor for anything! So peaceful, serene and overall lovely for a personal trip! I would love to stay and visit this amazing little treehouse again in the future!

While it’s possibly not for everyone, it’s certainly a really awesome place that’s ideal for a quiet, and relaxing couple of days! At first we were a little hesitant, only due to the fact that there was no TV (we’re just used to zoning out) … however, we honestly found that we didn’t need one at all. I highly recommend checking this place out in the fall. All of the orange leaves are beautiful! I only wish we had more rain when we visited and wish Oregon had more snow, cause this would be even better! The rain sound on the windows and roof was awesome! Definitely a lazy weekend retreat! Enjoy!

Find us

We're often asked about getting downtown or to the UO campus. Each is about two miles north. I like to walk to both and I do often. I allow about a half hour. The first two thirds of the walk is through Amazon Park. The rest (north for downtown, east for campus) is through nice neighborhoods. If you're coming by car, there's plenty of easy on-street parking here. Two bus lines run every half hour, each only a block or two from here. We have a bicycle that we lend out if you prefer that. I like to walk almost everywhere. Downtown and UO campus are each less than two miles north -- a pleasant 20-25 minute walk. On-street parking is easy if you bring a car.
